Hypselodoris variobranchia has been recently described, published on 14 September 2018. It is part of the Hypselodoris bullockii complex. It is characterized by its light blueish-purple background colour, and by a relatively broad opaque white band at the mantle margin. Hypselodoris variobranchia has three colour morphs of the gills, the first one whas solid blueish gills, the second one has orange gills witha bluish tinge, in the third morph are the gills basally blueish, the outer half is bright orange. The gill pockets are in all morphs well elevated.
The pictures #1 and #2 were misidentified and posted on 19 June 2003 at these websites as Hypselodoris bullockii (Collingwood, 1881) [Chromodoris].
I changed them on 18 August 2011 into Hypselodoris sp. 07  Genus: Stimpson, 1855,
the picture #9 was posted on 5 October 2014 as Hypselodoris sp. 08  Genus: Stimpson, 1855.
This species is as Hypselodoris sp. 8 in IPN at page 268.
Let me quote Epstein et al. (2018) on the etymology:
"The name variobranchia comes from Latin for variable gills, referring to the gill, which may be either orange or bright purple."
Pretty similar are:
Hypselodoris bullockii which differs by the pale pinkish background colour, and by thin white marginal band,
Hypselodoris violacea which differs by the dark blueish-purple colour of the rhinophore clubs.
Hypselodoris apolegma which differs by the purple colour, and by the reticulate white edging of the mantle.
Thorunna halourga which differs by the broad white mantle margin, and by the low gill pocket.
This picture shows the two colour morphs mating.
