Aegires citrinus is characterized by its yellow colour with darker spots. It ranges in colour from pale, almost translucent white, to a deep yellow depending on the colour of the sponge on which it is feeding.
The above specimens #1 and #2were identified by Terrence M. Gosliner, the specimens #3, #4, and #5 were misidentified and posted at these websites
as Aegires sublaevis  Odhner, 1932, and identified by Dr. Richard C. Willan, he writes pers comment:
"The type locality of Aegires sublaevis is Puerto de Oratava, Teneriffe, Canary Islands, therefore the specimens from Anilao cannot possibly be sublaevis or even cf. sublaevis".
Aegires citrinus is very similar to Aegires sp. 05, which has a far more elongate body.
This species was posted on 3 July 2003 on these websites as Aegires citrinus  Pruvot-Fol, 1930,
Fahey & Gosliner (2004) synonymized Notodoris with Aegires  Lovén, 1844, but the name Aegires citrinus was occupied by the older
Notodoris citrina  Bergh, 1875, (Homonymy), this caused the new name for this species:
I changed the name on 3 February 2005 into Aegires pruvotfolae  Fahey & Gosliner, 2004.
Moro & Ortea (2015) removed Notodoris from synonymy under Aegires, that is Homonymy is no longer involved,
I changed the name back to Aegires citrinus  Pruvot-Fol, 1930 on 1 February 2016.
