Phanerophthalmus batangas is characterized by a green-brown body. Let me quote Austin et al. (2018) "Body cylindrical, elongated; translucent, covered in dense green-brown specks. Cephalic shield triangular, notched, ending in pair of posterior lobes, slightly separated and lighter. Left parapodial lobe overlapping right lobe. Shell slightly visible. Eyes barely visible; periocular area pigmented."
This species was published on 12 July 2011 on these websites as Phanerophthalmus smaragdinus (Rüppell & Leuckart, 1828) [Cryptophthalmus], because I thought it to be a colour form. I changed the year on 8 January 2016 into 1830.
Yonow N. (2000) synonymized Phanerophthalmus smaragdinus (Rüppell & Leuckart, 1830) [Bulla] with
Phanerophthalmus olivaceus (Ehrenberg, 1828) [Cryptophthalmus]
I changed it again on 6 November 2018 and moved it from the family Smaragdinellidae  A. Adams & Reeve, 1848 into the
family Haminoeidae  Pilsbry, 1895.
Acoording to Austin et al. (2018) is Phanerophthalmus olivaceus (Ehrenberg, 1828) endemic to the Red Sea, I changed it again on 15 March 2020
into Phanerophthalmus batangas  Austin, Gosliner & Malaquias, 2018.
