The specimens with the incomplete "W" are most like a distinct species. All recent publications on species of "sea hares and heterobranch sea slugs with broad tropical ranges studied to date have been found to constitute species complexes (e.g. Ornelas-Gatdula et al., 2012; Alexander & Valdés, 2013;
Krug et al., 2013; Carmona et al., 2014a, b; Goodheart et al., 2015; Kienberger et al., 2016).
Biuve fulvipunctata occurs in the Pacific Ocean from Japan to Hawaii and Tahiti, and to the Philippines and Queensland Australia. It occurs in the Indian Ocean from Komodo Island, Indonesia to the île de La Réunion, in the Red Sea, in the Mediterranean Sea, and in the Eastern Atlantic Ocean
at Gran Canaria, Spain. It is most likely also a species complex.
Pretty similar are:
Mariaglaja alexisi which lacks the white marking on the head,
Chelidonura sandrana which lacks the white "W"-shaped mark on the head and has usually white and orange spots,
Mariaglaja inornata which differs by a broad white band across the front of the head-shield with a yellow or orange edge to the antero-lateral lobes, and
has the minute white spots only over the outer surface of the parapodia.
This species was posted on 14 January 2012 at these websites as Chelidonura fulvipunctata Baba, 1938, Zamora-Silva & Malaquias (2017) moved it
into the new genus Biuve Zamora-Silva & Malaquias, 2017.
