Plakobranchus papua is characterized by an "intense ochre body with white spots scattered all over the dorsum, head, and flanks: closest to the head region, on the anterior side corresponding to 1/4 of the body length, the spots are largest, on 2/4 and 4/4 of the body length the dots are smaller, and on the 3/4 of the body length they are larger, but not as large as on the anterior part of the body. Spots are pale white with a thin yellow outline and with areas with opaque white pigment." Meyers-Muñoz et al. (2016)
The long rolled rhinophores are black with purplish outer tips. The pedal tentacles are translucent white. The foot sole is white with a black tail.
This species was posted on 24 August 2016 at these websites as Plakobranchus cf. papua  Meyers-Muñoz & van der Velde, 2016, because the specimens from the Philippines differ by the colour of the rhinophores which are basally whitish, the outer half black/dark blue and with lighter tips, and by the blue colour of the foot and the 'tail'.
The co-author Bert W. Hoeksema wrote on this specimen (pers. comment):
"This is an undescribed species. We also found it in Papua but we did not include it in our paper. I found one near Cebu The blue foot sole is typical."
Mehrotra et al. (2020) have shown by DNA analyses that Plakobranchus papua is a variable species and is not endemic to Papua New Guinea, there are also records from Koh Tao, Thailand, and from Timor-Leste (East Timor).
I changed it on 15 October 2020 into Plakobranchus papua  Meyers-Muñoz & van der Velde, 2016
The specimen #5 was misidentified and posted on 24 July 2012 at these websites as Plakobranchus ocellatus van Hasselt, 1824, just as
specimen #6 which was posted on 20 October 2012.
