Verconia alboannulata (Rudman, 1986) [Noumea]

Click the thumbnail photos to enhance!

Verconia alboannulata is characteried by a translucent pink mantle with a broad cream or white marginal band. There is a very distinctive opaque white band in the midline between the rhinophores which splits just behind the rhinophores to form an elongate oval which encircles the gill pocket.
There are many similar coloured chromodorids which Bill Rudman calls the "Noumea purpurea colour group".
Pretty similar are:
Mexichromis pusilla, whose white band does not split behind the rhinophores,
Mexichromis similaris which has an translucent pinkish purple mantle and a median white line which forms a ring around the gill pocket. The upper half of the rhinophores and gills is translucent red/orange, the lower half is pale,
Verconia varians, which has no white patch or band around the gill pocket, and differs by the white midline, which varies from a broad white band to a series of up to three thin elongate white streaks, and
Verconia norba whose white band always encircle the gill pocket and can be broken in two about half way along its length.
This species was posted on 7 July 2003 on these websites as Noumea alboannulata  Rudman, 1986.
The discovery by Rüdiger Bieler that the generic name Noumea was first introduced by Fauvel (1874) for a beetle means that the subsequent introduction by Risbec (1928) for a nudibranch is invalid. Therefore the next available generic name has to be used for the genus of nudibranchs, and that
is Verconia  Pruvot-Fol, 1931.
