The mantle of Mexichromis pusilla is pale pink with a broad cream-white or yellowish band at the edge. There is an elongate white streak in the midline between the rhinophores and another in front of the gills. Mexichromis pusilla is characterized by the varying width of the cream band at the mantle margin, besides the two white streaks in the midline is it very thin, between the gills and the rhinophores is it very broad, giving the appearance of a waist
There are many similar coloured chromodorids which Bill Rudman calls the "Noumea purpurea colour group".
Pretty similar are:
Verconia varians, which differs by the constant width of of the broad cream band at the mantle margin, and by the white midline, which varies from a broad white band to a series of up to three elongate white streaks,
Verconia norba, which has a white band around the gill pocket
Mexichromis similaris which has an translucent pinkish purple mantle and a median white line which forms a ring around the gill pocket. The upper half of the rhinophores and gills is translucent red/orange, the lower half is pale, and
Noumea alboannulata which has an opaque white band in the midline which splits just behind the rhinophores to form an elongate oval which encircles the gill pocket.
This species was posted on 31 May 2003 on these websites as Durvilledoris pusilla (Bergh, 1874) [Chromodoris],
Johnson & Gosliner (2012) moved itto the genus Mexichromis  Bertsch, 1977.
