Mexichromis aurora is characterized by a pinkish purple to blue background colour. There are three wide whitish yellow longitudinal bands on the mantle, each outlined with opaque white. The central band forms a narrow ring around the gill pocket. Between the whitish bands are a number of large diffuse dark purple or blue spots. At the mantle edge are scattered smaller opaque white spots and sometimes dark blue or purple spots as well. The rhinophore clubs are orange with a broad white median band. The rhinophore stalks are translucent orange. The gills are similarly coloured - orange with a median white band.
Pretty similar are:
Hypselodoris maculosa which has multiple longitudinal white lines and up to three reddish bands on the white rhinophores,
Thorunna australis which differs by two longitudinal white lines, one on either side of the mantle and always one reddish band on the white rhinophores,
Thorunna cf. florens which differs by two broad dark pink longitudinal bands, outlined in opaque white, by orange rhinophores with a white spot, and by a transverse orange patch on the front of the mantle.
This species was posted on 6 September 2004 at these websites as Pectenodoris aurora  Johnson & Gosliner, 1998,
R.F. Johnson & Gosliner (2012) moved it to the genus Mexichromis  Bertsch, 1977,
I changed the authority on 29 April 2016 according to WoRMS.
